About Us

The National Engineering Institute of Greece, also known as NERIG, is a national multi-disciplinary research institute that conducts research in various engineering related industries. Nerig is also the leading body for professional engineers in Greece with membership now in excess of 20,000 engineers. A democratic organisation, the affairs of NERIG are decided by engineers/Fellow members from all disciplines and administered by our professional staff in Thessaloniki, Athens and London. NERIG is funded partially by the Greek government as part of its Forward in Engineering program, by the European Union through participation in major research programs such as ESPRIT, EUREKA, RACE, LRE, TEMPUS, BRITE-EURAM, IMPACT etc, through research it conducts on behalf of various corporations and donations.

Nerig was established in 1997 by partners from academia, private industry and government laboratories concerned with the lack of an official organization for their profession and a professional research institute dedicated to engineering. Through Nerig, these sectors come together to conduct problem and client oriented research, and facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration among scientists, practitioners, and users.

The Institution has grown to cover the entire range of technologies and industries in which engineers work. It is committed to research, ''technology transfer'' as well as ensuring the highest professional standards. The institute has its own research facilities in Thessaloniki where some main divisions are housed and also shares the research facilities of 3 main universities/partners in NERIG: The National Technical University of Athens, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, The University of Patras. Along with their academic staff and research teams who are members of NERIG, we form a 700+ strong team with extensive combined experience, educated in more than 30 countries worldwide and responsible for more that 500 publications, some of which can be found under our Publications menu. Members work in research, design, development, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, contracting, consulting and teaching, in fields as diverse as lubrication, satellite launching, surgical implants and in power stations.

All research projects are supervised by the Institute’s Research Committee, which looks after the financial management of such projects including payrolls. In recent years, over 1200 research projects have been processed with a total budget in excess of 630 Million Euros.

NERIG publishes a number of magazines, journals and technical papers. There is also a range of information booklets and video programmes available from the Media & Marketing department. Anyone involved in engineering will find something in NERIG for them.
